Storm Damaged Fence in Fresno: What to Do and Who Pays

What to do when wind, winter rain or a fallen tree takes down your fence in Fresno: fast repair, insurance, neighbor trees and temporary fixes.

Storm Damaged Fence in Fresno: What to Do and Who Pays

If a storm took your fence down, take photos of the fence and of what hit it, then call your insurance company and a fence company before you clear anything away. Fresno gets most of its fence damage in winter and early spring, when a windy front follows several days of rain and the posts are standing in soft, soaked ground.

Half my fence blew down. Who can fix it fast and what will it cost?

Call or text us a photo and tell us about how many feet are down. A fallen section with broken posts is a major repair, $900 to $2,500 in the national 2026 figures. After a storm every fence company in the valley gets busy at once, so the sooner you call, the sooner you get a date.

My dogs are in the yard and the fence is open to the road. What can be done right away?

The gap can be closed for now. Standing posts are braced, and a temporary panel goes across the opening until the full repair. Tell us when you call that dogs are in the yard or that there is a pool, so we know it cannot wait.

Is there an extra charge for emergency or weekend fence repair?

It varies by company, so ask before anyone comes out. Some charge a higher rate after hours and some do not offer it. A quick temporary closure first, and the proper repair on a normal workday, is usually the cheaper route.

Does homeowners insurance cover a fence knocked down by a storm or a tree?

Sometimes. Many policies list a fence under other structures. Whether yours pays depends on what caused the damage, your deductible and the policy wording. A short repair may cost less than the deductible. Your agent or insurer is the only one who can answer for your policy. We give you a written estimate to send them.

My neighbor's tree fell on my fence. Whose insurance pays?

In most cases your own policy covers your own fence, even though the tree grew next door. It can be different if the tree was plainly dead or dangerous and the neighbor had been told. Your insurer can advise. If it is the boundary fence you both share, read the note on California fence law below.

The insurer offered much less than the repair quote because the fence is old. Now what?

Ask for the calculation in writing. Some policies pay the depreciated value of an old fence, not the cost of a new one. Reply with an itemized estimate. If the gap does not close, rebuilding only the damaged run is often what the payment will cover.

The storm knocked the fence down and my neighbor says it is mine. Who pays?

For a fence on the boundary, California law presumes that both owners benefit and that each is equally responsible for the reasonable cost of maintaining or replacing it, unless there is a written agreement that says otherwise (Civil Code section 841). If the question is where the boundary is, that is for a licensed land surveyor. See our page on shared fences.
